A manufacturing company wanted to get a better handle on work-related injuries and costs. A needs assessment was completed. The solution was an Early Intervention process that included symptiom reporting at the first signs of discomfort, rapid assessment of symptioms, first aid/protective devices (such as splints), job analysis and ergonomic intervention.

The Results...
• A 30% reduction in MSD-related OSHA loggings compared to the prior year.
• A 62% reduction in MSD-related cases was realized when compared to the prior 4 years.
• The cost per per MSD claim descreased $4,000 per claim.
• Projected annual cost savings exceeded $400,000.

In addition, over 130 ergonomic improvements were completed. The company recently reached 1 full year without a lost-time accident, an accomplishment that had not been attained in its 100 year history.

General Mills Green Giant was experiencing costs associated with work-related injuries. Available data and injury management processes were analyzed.

The Solution...
Complete a Functional Job Analysis.

Top level management supported the entire process. Job Functional Descriptions were created for all the jobs in the plant. These were used to enhance return to work and hiring processes.

Ergonomic Analysis and customized supervisor / empoloyee eductional sessions were also developed. These actions fueled employee safety awareness. The company became a benchmark practice in their corporation for worker's health and safety.

The employer reported a cost-savings over $500,000 within two years of initiating the project.
